Work at Home for People with Disabilities

Disclosure: I was compensated to research and write about this topic and website.  All opinions and words expressed are my own.

I often talk to people who are out of work due to disabilities.  They receive an income from social security and they usually tell me that it is not enough to live on and that they would love to be able to work again.  Part of my motivation in creating this blog was to help those people.

I was very exicted to be contacted by a kindred spirit recently who asked me to research and write about MyEmploymentOptions.com.  This website specializes in putting people between the ages of 18 and 64 with disabilities back to work.  Many of the positions they offer are telecommuting positions that can be done from home.

My Employment Options.com belongs to Employment Options, Inc which is a certified employment network within the national Ticket to Work program.  Ticket to Work is a program created by Congress and the Social Security Administration with the goal of helping people with disabilities become self sufficient again.

There are many things I love about this program.  First and foremost, I love that it is FREE for people who collect SSI or SSD (non retirement).  As you know if you read my blog, I believe that you should never have to pay to work.  This goes double for people with disabilities who are on a fixed income.  Another perk of this program is that it allows people to ease back into working.  Many of the staff at Employment Options, Inc. are disabled and have been through this program themselves so they know how hard it can be to get back to work and how intimidating it is to make so many changes.  My Employment Options also offers incentives to job seekers and helps to protect them from things like losing their health insurance.  Finally, my absolute favorite part of My Employment Options.com is that they focus on people's ABILITIES instead of their disabilities!  Too often, we are defined by our handicaps in life instead of being looked at for what we can do.  The staff are truly passionate about this.

If you are wondering what types of jobs you can find on MyEmploymentOptions.com, I can tell you that they work with many of the top work at home companies in addition to many local businesses. They are often given positions to staff for these companies so they know exactly what companies are looking for at any given time.  You will find positions such as customer service reps, technology support staff, medical billing, and case management, to name just a few.

When you sign up at My Employment Options, you will be given a personal employment counselor who will focus on your abilities and assist you in making the transition into the workforce.  As I mentioned, many staff have been through this program themselves and are well versed in the unique challenges you face as a disabled person seeking work.  You will also be able to speak with a benefits counselor that can help you understand your SSA medical benefits.

If you are concerned about qualifications, the minimum that you need in order to be placed in a position is:
A High School Diploma or GED
The ability to work a set schedule that may include weekends and full time training hours
PC (no Mac’s) with minimum 1 GHz to 1.5 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB free space
Good computer navigation skills (move between multiple windows and programs)
Ability to type at least 25 words per minute
High Speed Internet service
Home office that is distraction free
Clear speaking voice

There are higher end positions that they staff that are more specialized, but if you meet the above criteria you should be able to be placed somewhere.

Not only can people with disabilities increase their income by going back to work, but working helps people to feel empowered and fulfilled.  I love what is happening over at MyEmploymentOptions.com and I am honored to be able to spread the word about their mission!
